Malton teenager crowned champ
A Malton kickboxing club has its first British champion.
Twelve-year-old Morgan Furness Law won gold in the -50kg weight category at the WKA British Championships in Manchester, fighting for Tony Dias, who runs United Martial Arts College.
Other medal winners were Ryan Donaugh, eight, Jim Henry O'Neill, nine, Aaron Furness Law, 15, and Jimmy Harrison, 22, who all took bronze. Sylvia De Carr, 34, took silver in the women's veteran category.
The other fighters who took part were Nyle Furness Law, Daniel Lewis, Andy Morley, Dave Spowart, Vinny Egan, Carl Render and Caroline Mooney.
Dias, who took bronze in the veteran men's category, said: "I'm proud of Morgan. Everyone including those who didn't win a medal did really well. Those who didn't had some tough opponents in their sections - ex-world champions and current British champions. The medal winners are automatically selected for the British team to compete in this year's world championships in Disneyland Florida in November.
"It's a good start for us at our new club which will officially open in April. It's particularly good for the youngsters to win and achieve something good for themselves and the community. A big thank you should go to Ryedale District Council and R Yates & Sons for their help with the new training facilities.
"We're getting a reputation for putting out some good fighters, not just at a local level, but nationally as well. With us being able to focus even more on doing what we do, we should have more champions at the club soon."
