Ryedale sign off in style
Scarborough and District FA
Junior Cup: Ryedale SC 5, Lealholm 2
Ryedale Sports Club completed a memorable season when they won the Scarborough and District FA Junior Cup on Monday night by beating holders Lealholm 5-2 in the final at Whitby Town's Turnbull ground.
It was their fourth piece of silverware this season following their Beckett League treble and the first time they have won the trophy in 23 years.
Ryedale where at their blistering best in the first half, opening the scoring after only five minutes when Adam Hornby's 40-yard dash down the right was followed by an excellent cross converted by Marc Dobson's right foot. It was Dobson's 60th goal in all competitions this season.
It was all Ryedale and only a goal-line clearance prevented them from doubling their lead.
The inevitable second goal came on 20 minutes when a long throw by Matty Bower found captain Heath Brown who beat two men before firing beyond Lealholm goalkeeper James Gibson.
On the half hour Ryedale went further ahead when man of the match Dobson set up Hornby who finished off a good move in style.
Ben Richardson, Dobson and John Beever all went close for Ryedale before Richardson netted three minutes after the interval with an unstoppable 20-yard left-foot shot.
Mike Knight pulled a goal back for Lealholm on 55 minutes and only an outstanding save from Rob Featherstone prevented Lealholm reducing the arrears still further.
Despite their dominance, Ryedale were caught out on the break 20 minutes from the end when Anthony Morgan scored to give Lealholm an outside chance. They pressed forward in the later stages and went close several times before two minutes from time their goalkeeper Gibson was sent off for deliberate handball outside the penalty area.
In stoppage time Ryedale made their extra man count and Hornby broke clear to set his second goal of the night.
