Pikes denied a a shot at league leapfrog
Pickering Town had their crunch game against Glapwell postponed on Saturday morning after a 9.30am pitch inspection.
Had the Pikes won the game against their Northern Counties East League premier division rivals they would have gone second but as it is they remain fourth and Glapwell remain second.
The top of the table is as follows: Winterton on 76 points have just about won the league, second-placed Glapwell have 61 points from 29 games played. Liversedge are third with 59 points, the same as the Pikes but they have played 32 games while the Pikes have only played 28 games. So if the Pikes keep on winning their games they could well finish second but will not be allowed to gain promotion because of their ground grading.
Pickering Town 1, Nostell MW 0
Last Tuesday night the Pikes beat sixth-placed Nostell MW 1-0 in front of a crowd of 127. The only goal of the game was scored after 51 minutes by Richard Whitfield following a Danny Gildea right-wing cross. In the first half Steve Baxter had a good chance cleared off the goal-line.
Pikes manager Mark Wood was delighted with his side's victory. "We started very well in the first half of the opening 45 minutes," he told the Gazette & Herald. "It then became a battle, a very tough battle at times but we did our job, won by an odd goal, obtained three points, and more importantly kept a clean sheet."
The Pikes have two away games this week. On Saturday they play Mickleover Sports and last night were due to visit Eccleshill United - weather permitting. The Mickleover Sports game will have a coach going. To reserve a seat contact chairman Tony Dunning. When the sides clashed at Pickering in November the Pikes were worthy 6-0 winners so they will be looking to complete a league double on Saturday.
Last Tuesday's team against Nostell MW was as follows: Martin, Aziz, Brunton, Eeles, McNaughton, Connor, Gildea (Williams 87), Dutton, Whitfield (Rose 89), Greening and Baxter (MacAuley 89). Man of the Match was Ricky Greening.
Tomorrow (Thursday), the Pikes Under-19s are at home to Bridlington Town, kick-off 7.45pm in a league game.
The Pikes provisional first team list of games for April is as follows: Tuesday, April 1, Parkgate (home); April 5, Arnold Town (home); April 8, Eccleshill Utd (home); April 12, Armthorpe Welfare (away); April 15, Winterton Rangers (home); April 19, Long Eaton (home); April 22, Glapwell (provisional, home); April 26, Parkgate (away).
Last Saturday was also semi-final first leg day in the FA Vase with Kirkham and Wesham beating Needham Market 3-2. Needham Market beat Merstham who conquered the Pikes in front of a crowd of 1053. The second semi-final saw favourites Whitley Bay well beaten away at Lowestoft 4-0 in front of a crowd of 2101.
The second leg of these games are this coming weekend to see who the Wembley finalists will be.
