Fatal crash driver named

A RETIRED army officer killed in a road accident in East Yorkshire has been named.

Colonel George Edward V Rochfort-Rae, of Wonersh, near Guildford, was killed last Thursday on the A166 at Wetwang with its junction with the B1248 Malton road.

The 79-year-old was driving a silver Renault Clio away from Wetwang and in the direction of York when it was involved in a collision with a silver-coloured Peugeot 206 heading towards Wetwang at 4.39pm.

No-one else was in the car with him.

Two ambulance crews, a doctor and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the accident and an off-duty police officer began to administer first aid to Col Rochfort-Rae but he was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor at 5.20pm.

The driver of the Peugeot, a 75-year-old man who lives in the York area, is said to have suffered chest and back injuries while police said his passenger, a 71-year-old woman, sustained minor chest injuries, although the Yorkshire Ambulance Service has no record of taking them to hospital.

Both cars are believed to have been written off in the accident.

Humberside Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident or anyone who saw the cars prior to the crash to contact them on 0845 6060222.
